Jim Schmelzer | 2010 Top Pro Tour hosted by Westcott

Jim is an award winning photographer, lecturer and trainer for the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (Kelby Training). He has also been a technical representative for F.J. Westcott Company for over 25 years. Jim has been actively involved in designing new light modifier products as well as creating instructional videos demonstrating control of light. He conducts workshops, speaks at seminars, and demonstrates lighting at tradeshows. He's also the author and creator of the Quality of Light video series.

Jim has been a member of the Professional Photographers of America, where he holds the Master Craftsman Photographer Degree. He also holds a Master's Degree with the Wedding & Portrait Photographers International. Jim is owner of Elite Photographic Studio in Shelby Township, Michigan where he specializes in high school senior portraits and weddings.

Mastering light for over 25 years: In this session, Master Craftsman Photographer James Schmelzer will explain the theory of studio lighting techniques through a live, easy-to-understand demonstration. He will walk you through an entire model shoot, discussing everything from wardrobe to posing and lighting. Lighting topics will include how to make light soft, determining the correct distance of your main light from your subject, light depth of field, producing specular highlights, and feathering light. In addition, he will show you how to obtain amazing results with just one simple light and a reflector, all the way to a full five-light studio setup. Be prepared for a visually educational experience as Jim unveils the true theory of light.

Westcott Expert: Lighting Demonstrations

Great portraits begin with great lighting. Using real-world demonstrations, you’ll learn ways to ensure quality lighting for indoor and outdoor portraits. This session will cover popular lighting styles, correct light positioning, proper exposures and everything in between. Whether you’re working with studio strobes, constant lights or speedlites, you will learn techniques that will instantly improve your lighting skills both in the studio and on-location.
